Faculty at the ZSFG Division of Neurology

Our Specialties

ZSFG faculty are comprised of specialties throughout neurology, including epilepsy, neuromuscular, memory disorders, neuroinflammation, neuro-HIV and global health, and neuro-emergency including coma, traumatic brain injury, and stroke.

All of our faculty are involved in the four pillars at UCSF: patient care, research, education, and equity.

Neuro-Emergency, Coma, TBI, and Stroke

ZSFG Neurology Clinical Chief Claude Hemphill, MD directs our Neuro-Emergency Research Program and is our Neurocritical Care Service Director for the ZSFG intensive care unit (ICU). With Vineeta Singh, MD, Neel Singhal, MD, Edilberto Amorim, MD, and Debbie Madhok, MD--and in partnership with the UCSF Stroke Program--the ZSFG Neuro-Emergency team provides cutting edge patient care for patients at ZSFG, as well as opportunities for patient volunteers through the Neuro-Emergency Research Program.

Neurohospitalist

The inpatient services at ZSFG Neurology are led by Inpatient Director Nicole Rosendale, MD and are staffed by the world's leading neurohospitalist and neurology specialty physicians. Learn more about the physicians who staff our inpatient services using the buttons to the left.

Outpatient Specialty Care

The outpatient specialty clinics at ZSFG Neurology are led by Outpatient Director Alexandra Brown, MD and are staffed by the world's leading neurologists. Learn more about the physicians who staff our specialty clinics using the buttons to the left.

Epilepsy

The Epilepsy team at ZSFG Neurology is led by Epilepsy Director Edilberto Amorim, MD and it is comprised of epilepsy experts from UCSF Health and the Department of Public Health. Our epilepsy staff is managed by Neurosciences Nurse Manager Lawrence Chyall, NP. Epilepsy faculty at ZSFG include Edilberto Amorim, MDPaul Garcia, MDVikram Rao, MD, and Jon Kleen, MD.

Neuro-Infectious Diseases and Global Health

Our previous clinical chief Richard Price, MD pioneered the field of HIV-Neurology, and continues his international research collaborations and projects, some of which have patient volunteers who have participated with him for decades. 

We are fortunate to have Felicia Chow, MD. growing the Chow Research Group in neuro-infectious diseases and global health. With many actively enrolling trials around the world, Dr. Chow also directs the Neuro-Infectious Disease Clinic at UCSF Health.

Neuromuscular

The ZSFG Neurology Division has a long historical partnership with the UCSF Neuromuscular Division, and a number of our faculty share a home in both divisions. Alexandra Brown, MD, Mark Terrelonge, MD, Jessamyn Conell-Price, MD ,and Aaron Berkowitz, MD are some of our outpatient neurology specialists.

Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroinflammation

Jeff Gelfand, MD has been committed to the care of patients with Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroinflammation at ZSFG for many years. His clinical, research, and educational activities at ZSFG and the UCSF Division of Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroinflammation have earned the recognition of many teaching awards.

Memory Disorders

The UCSF Memory and Aging Center has been advancing healthcare in cognitive disorders for 20 years and staffs a memory and cognitive disorders clinic at ZSFG. Serggio Lanata, MD has been dedicated to providing memory care to patients at ZSFG through the memory and general neurology clinics.
