What We Do: Research

Research at ZSFG

The multidisciplinary research team of clinicians, scientists, engineers and many more at ZSFG leads cutting edge science, innovation and development. Our robust portfilio of federal, industry and privately sponsored researh studies are critical to prevent neurological injury, develop new treatments and determine leading practices to better care for our patients.

Our research teams work tirelessly to attack complex neurological disease and injury from all angles, in both the acute and clinical settings. Through our research work, we bring advances to patient care as well as better understanding of the issues faced by our patients. At ZSFG Neurology, we are within the educational and research institution of UCSF and the county hospital for San Francisco--creating a vibrant synthesis of research, patient care, and teaching.

Our Research Mission

To support development of research programs that will improve medical care “from bench to bedside,” right now focusing in Neuroemergency (stroke, TBI, cardiac arrest, intensive care), Neuroinfectious diseases, Epilepsy, and Global Health.

Key Objectives

Innovation

Designing and executing creative ways to answer the bothersome questions of how to treat our patients and improve outcomes.

Training and Collaboration

With experts in clinical and translational reserach, the UCSF divison of Neurology at ZSFG as well as our vast global research network aims to equip our trainees with essential tools and skills to enable them to become successful independent researchers.

Equity

ZSFG Neurology has been at the front line with a commitment to equity--in our provider and staff training, in our commitment to supporting our patients, in our development of curriculum for tomorrow's physicians, and in research.

Global Health

Led by the investigators for the UCSF Balance Program, numerous educational and research programs devoted to improving global health are based at ZSFG Neurology.

Precision Medicine

Precision medicine is developing treatments  tailored to individual patients, based on their genetic, clinical, and risk factor profiles. The ZSFG Division of Neurology is working to obtain an understanding of our genes and other "biomarkers" that will translate into “precision” medicine for patients with many types of neurologic disease, from coma and stroke to epilepsy and multiple sclerosis.
